Despite overcoming a broken wrist in March, University of Massachusetts alum Rebecca Donaghue placed eighth in the 5,000 meter run at the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials on Friday at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus. Donaghue had qualified for the July 4th final in the event which was televised live nationally with a 10th place effort the previous Monday in the preliminary race. Representing the New Balance Boston running club, Donaghue clocked a time of 15 minutes, 35.48 seconds in the 5K finals which was nearly three seconds faster than her time in Monday's prelim race.
The UMass women's cross-country team was named a United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic Team which recognizes teams with grade-point-averages of 3.0 or higher. The Minutewomen ranked 36th of 159 colleges on the All-Academic Team list boasting a team GPA of 3.50. The Minutewomen are also one of four teams in the Atlantic 10 to make the All-Academic Team. Senior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led the Minutewomen in an eighth-place finish in the women's ECAC Championship race, while sophomore Andrew McCann (Fayettville, N.Y.) headed the men's team and led them to a fifth-place finish in the men's IC4A Championship Race Saturday in the Bronx. Members of the men's team also participated in the Coach's Race on Saturday, another of the three races held in Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday. Kevin Johnson (Ludlow, Mass.) won the Coach's Race placing first overall and finishing the race in 26 minutes and 29 seconds. (more)
The men's and women's cross country teams will head to New York on Saturday to compete in their last race of the 2007 season. Fordham University will host the ECAC women's championship as well as the IC4A men's championship races at local Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Both teams are coming off strong performances towards the end of their seasons and a solid showing at the NCAA Regional Qualifier last weekend.
Christina DeRosa and Jesse Regnier of Massachusetts have been named the Atlantic 10 Student-Athletes of the Year in men's and women's cross country, respectively, in voting conducted among the Conference's sports information directors. Alongside DeRosa, redshirt junior Shiyi Zan was also named to the academic all-conference team.

The men's cross country team placed 11th while the women's team took 28th at the NCAA Regional Qualifier in Boston Saturday. Senior leader Christina Derosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led the way for the women while freshman Jeff Hill (Blackstone, Mass.) paced the men's team. The men improved greatly on their finish from last year moving up three places.
