Rebecca Donaghue Places 8th In 5K At U.S. Olympic Trials

Despite overcoming a broken wrist in March, University of Massachusetts alum Rebecca Donaghue placed eighth in the 5,000 meter run at the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials on Friday at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus. Donaghue had qualified for the July 4th final in the event which was televised live nationally with a 10th place effort the previous Monday in the preliminary race. Representing the New Balance Boston running club, Donaghue clocked a time of 15 minutes, 35.48 seconds in the 5K finals which was nearly three seconds faster than her time in Monday's prelim race. Christina DeRosa Places 18th In 10K At NCAA National Track Championships

A story-book senior season came to a close on Thursday night as UMass' Christina DeRosa placed 18th in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Track & Field National Championships hosted by Drake University. DeRosa was just the fourth UMass women's track and field performer to compete at the NCAA Championships. She entered the 27 competitor field ranked 25 and moved up seven spots with her time of 35:33.33 on Thursday evening. (more)

The field for the 2008 NCAA Women's Track & Field National Championship Meet hosted by Drake University was announced Tuesday afternoon with University of Massachusetts senior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) qualifying for the 10,000 meter race. The meet will be held in Des Moines, Iowa, at Drake Stadium beginning Wednesday, June 11 and finishing on Saturday, June 14. DeRosa will compete on Thursday night (6/12/08) at 8:10 PM. She is seeded 25th of 27 total competitors. (more)

Track Foursome Turn In Strong Performances At NCAA East Regional Meet

Redshirt junior Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.), senior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.), junior Jesse Regnier (Hampden, Mass.) and Lisa Wilson (Holden, Mass.) each turned in strong performances on Friday and Saturday night as they represented the UMass track and field teams at the NCAA East Regional Meet hosted by Florida State University. DeRosa will now wait to hear if she qualifies for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 meters. She is currently ranked 28th nationally in the event. Last season, the NCAA took 27 competitors in the 10K field.

Four University of Massachusetts track and field student-athletes will head to Florida State this Friday and Saturday for the NCAA East Regional Meet. Kristen Bakanowski (pole vault), Christina DeRosa (5,000 meters), and Lisa Wilson (discus) will represent the UMass women's team, while Jesse Regnier (3,000 meter steeplechase) represents the men's team. Each will be competing to qualify for the NCAA National Championship Meet.

DeRosa & Zan Named A-10 Women's Track Academic All-Conference

Christina DeRosa and Shiyi Zan were each named to the 2008 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Women's Track & Field Academic All-Conference Team as announced by the league office. For DeRosa, this was her third academic honor for track. This was Zan's first track academic honor after earning academic honors during the fall cross country season as well. DeRosa, a kinesiology major, has had a career senior year for UMass as she prepares for the NCAA Regional Meet which begins this Friday in Tallahassee, Fla., and will be hosted by Florida State. DeRosa ranks 28th nationally in the 10,000 meters and 24th in the East Region in the 5,000 meters.
