Against some of the top competition in the Northeast, the UMass women's tennis team hung tough in its final tune-up of the fall season at the Big Green Invitational over the weekend. The team played a number of mini dual singles and doubles matches against Akron, Boston University, Syracuse, and Temple. The Minutewomen impressed against the Orange with a 4-1 doubles mark. UMass also hung tough against Boston University (3-4 in singles, 1-2 in doubles) and Akron (2-3 singles, 2-1 doubles). Fresh off another outstanding season, the UMass Women's Tennis team has learned that it was named 2008 International Tennis Association (ITA) Academic All Americans. The honor goes to any team who accumulate a team grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Along with the team recognition, five individual athletes earned honors as well with Kaitlyn Carpenter, Laura Danai, Stephanie Gimenez, Maude Lecluyse, and Masha Pozar recording a 3.4 GPA or above. Many friends and family came out to support UMass Head Women's Tennis Coach Judy Dixon on Saturday, June 21 as she was inducted into the USTA New England Hall of Fame along with five others at historic Newport, R.I. The evening began at 4:15 p.m. with photos and concluded after 9 p.m. with Dixon's final speech. Dixon's induction included letters from both her first coach (Doris Hart) and former doubles partner and famous women's tennis advocate (Billie Jean King). Coming off their sixth-straight Atlantic-10 Semifinal appearance (and 10 in the last 11 seasons), the Minutewomen continue to play a challenging schedule, highlighted by four matches against NCAA Tournament teams and one against a Division II Quarterfinalist. Candynce Boney and Masha Pozar were named to the Atlantic 10 First Team for the 2008 Season. Boney and Pozar both went 1-1 in No. 1 doubles and singles at the A-10 Championship. Boney finished the season with an 18-10 singles record and a 24-11 doubles record. She lead the team with singles wins, Laura Danai was second with 17.
