Football Falls To New Hampshire, 31-14

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) - Stephan Lewis compiled 260 yards running and receiving and scored three touchdowns as New Hampshire upset Massachusetts 31-14 Saturday.

Lewis ran for 186 yards on 47 carries and caught five passes for 50 yards, and also returned a kickoff 24 yards.

His 1-yard run gave New Hampshire (3-6, 2-5 Atlantic 10) a 7-0 lead, and his 3-yard run put the Wildcats ahead to stay, 14-7.

Lewis caught a 32-yard scoring pass from Mike Granieri with 38 second left in the half as New Hampshire broke open the game with 24 points in the second quarter for a 31-7 lead.

Massachusetts (7-3, 5-2) tied the game at 7 on Anton McKenzie's 96-yard interception return late in the first quarter, and closed the scoring early in the third quarter on R.J. Cobbs' 7-yard run.

Granieri, who hit 16 of 27 passes for 147 yards, threw five yards to Carl Betz for the other UNH touchdown, and Conno McCormick kicked a 23-yard field goal.

Tim Day completed 15 of 34 passes for Massachusetts and was intercepted four times. Two of the thefts, by E.J. DeWitt and George Yasso, led to UNH touchdowns.

Massachusetts also lost one fumble.

New Hampshire controlled the ball more than 41 minutes as it rushed for 258 yards and outgained Massachusetts 405-212.
