UMass Men's Basketball Officially Adds Bailey, Wiggins, Wilcher To Roster With classes underway at UMass, Derek Kellogg has set his roster as he begins his first season as the head coach at his alma mater. Kellogg has announced the addition of transfers Hashim Bailey, a 6-10 forward/center, from the University of Memphis and Doug Wiggins, a 6-2 guard from the University of Connecticut. Both players came to UMass with two years of eligibility remaining. Also joining the roster officially is forward Travon Wilcher, a 6-7 Springfield native, who sat out last year to meet academic requirements. Wilcher will be eligible to play this season while Bailey and Wiggins will sit out as redshirt transfers per the NCAA. The Minutemen have started individual workout sessions and will hold an outside workout on Friday at 1 p.m. The sessions will take place at "The Horseshoe" under the Southwest Towers and are open to the public. The UMass-Holy Cross rivalry in men's basketball will be renewed for the next three seasons starting with a Dec. 10, 2008 meeting at the Mullins Center this season. The teams will play at the DCU Center in Worcester in the 2009-10 season and will wrap up the series with a meeting at the Mullins Center in 2010-11. The Crusaders and Minutemen have not played since Holy Cross beat UMass, 67-56, on Dec. 4, 2001 in Amherst. (more)
According to College Chalk Talk, UMass point guard Chris Lowe is the No. 3 returning player in the Atlantic 10. The website only lists Temple's Dionte Christmas and Saint Joseph's Ahmad Nivins ahead of Lowe. Ricky Harris comes in at No. 7. (more)
The University of Massachusetts released its 2008-09 men's basketball schedule today as the Atlantic 10 finalized the league portion of the schedule. The Minutemen will be playing the teams that competed for the 2008 NCAA Championship in Kansas and Memphis. UMass takes on the defending champion Jayhawks on Dec. 13 in Kansas City. UMass travels to the national finalist Tigers on Nov. 17 at the FedEx Forum. That game pits new UMass head coach Derek Kellogg against his mentor and former coach John Calipari. It will be the first time UMass has played against Calipari since he left Amherst after leading the Minutemen to the 1996 Final Four.
The University of Massachusetts and Clear Channel Communications Inc. have reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension where WRNX 100.9 FM will continue to be the flagship station of UMass sports on the airwaves in Western Massachusetts. That partnership continues with the debut of the first broadcast of the 2008-09 season, the UMass Football Show With Don Brown on Thursday night at 7 p.m. WRNX 100.9 will carry every UMass football, men's basketball and hockey along with selected men's lacrosse games.
